Welcome students, parents and community partners! We are very excited to have the first month of school underway with such good success. Over 1700 students arrived on campus Tuesday ready for a terrific year of growth and learning. We are also very excited to note this is West Hills 31st year as a school and are planning a great week of celebration the last week of February culminating in our West Hills Foundation Gala Dinner and Hall of Fame ceremony on Saturday, March 3, 2018 at the Handlery Hotel (more exciting information to come!).

This year we are also up for the renewal of our 6 year school accreditation. We expect a visit via the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) visiting team to do this. West Hills has been  working within our community surveying students and parents (during PACK Day), meeting in our focus group  per the WASC process, and getting feedback from students via our Student Senate meetings to participate in this process. We will continue to do so as we prepare our WASC report and self-reflection along with our Action Plan in preparation for our March visit from the WASC Committee. Our School Site Council are also involved  and we will be inviting parents to give feedback to the visiting committee at one time (TBD) during the March 18-21, 2018 visit. More specifics and information to come on this piece. In the meantime, we thank you in advance for your support as we strive to be the best school for our students and community that we can be!

This summer, Mrs. Addy's AP Chemistry students got the opportunity to perform research in an inorganic synthesis lab at Point Loma Nazarene University. Students got to foster their interest in the sciences and gained experience working in a nitrogen atmosphere glove box, as well as attending presentations to hear about other scientific research at the university. We are looking forward to having this same opportunity next summer for students interested in majoring in the scientific field.

Students enjoyed working on a college campus and applying their studies in a research environment. We are fortunate in our college and career partnerships! Thank you PLNU,  Dr. Laurence BeauvaisDr. Sara Choung,  and Mrs. Addy for giving our students this opportunity. If you or your student is interested in science or AP Chemistry, please talk with any of our wonderful science teachers or Mrs. Addy in room S-5 or by email at saddy@guhsd.net.

West Hills Theater Program continues to win honors!

Every year, the National Youth Arts (NYA) Association has judges that come to youth theatre productions, critiques the shows, and hosts an award show in the summer. NYA critiques shows from San Diego to LA, Colorado, Arizona, and New York.

This year, the awards show was on July 2nd and West Hills won two awards and had four nominations! This is quite an accomplishment for a public high school!

Awards: Ashley Carter for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Play for Elizabeth Proctor in The Crucible. She is the only person that won this award in our San Diego area!

Ms. Carrin Edwards, teacher, as Outstanding Direction for The Crucible. Ms. Edwards insists "it's not really about me, it shows how hard the kids worked on this show."  Also, West Hills was the only public school to win this award! The three others that won were private schools and theatre organizations.

We are also very proud of our nominations:

Nominations: 1. Analisa Reynoso for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Musical for Zombie Prom
2. Sheamus O'Brien for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Play for The Crucible
3. Selena Noriega and Jaden Roschefski for Outstanding Costume Design for Zombie Prom
4. Ms. Carrin Edwards  for Outstanding Set Design for Zombie Prom. Again, she notes "the kids build and paint the set so this award is not about me."

Congratulations to our talented and dedicated drama students who were nominated, won and participated! You continue to entertain and enthrall us with your work and passion for theatre of all kinds! Can't wait for this year's productions!
